cloak and dagger. The immensely popular Spanish play- wright Lope de Vega (see es de lope) wrote many plays that were called comedies de capa y espada (comedies of cloak and sword) because they featured spies and other adventurers armed with cloaks and daggers. The phrase passed over into French, and by the early 1900s came into English as a term for any ac- tion that involved spying or other intrigue. |
