词汇 | hell afloat |
词源 | hell afloat. Usually old hulks no good for sailing anymore, British prison ships were the concentration camps of the Revo- lutionary War. It has been estimated that they took the lives of more American fighting men (11,000 to 15,000) during the Revolution than enemy rifles did. Such ships were often dubbed hell afloat by the prisoners, whatever the ship’s real name. |
