词源	helot. The original helots, slaves or serfs, were inhabitants of the town of Helos in Laconia, enslaved by the Spartans in an- cient times. The Spartans actually ranked their helots midway between citizens and slaves, but certainly treated them like flunkeys. As an object lesson to Spartan youth that drunken- ness is evil, helots were often forced to drink more than they could handle and then exhibited in the public square.
