Muhammadanism. Muhammad (or Mohammed, or Maho- met) “the praiseworthy,” was the title given to the founder of the Muslim religion, his original name having been Kotham or Halabi. The prophet of the Arabs was born after his father’s death in about a.d. 570, grew up as an orphan in Mecca, and died in Medina in 632. A camel driver at 25, he married his em- ployer, a rich widow 15 years his senior, who became the first of his 10 wives. Muhammad was 40 when he felt he had been called to be a prophet and began receiving messages he be- lieved were from God, who commanded him to relay them to his countrymen. He called the monotheistic religion he preached Islam, not Muhammadanism, its keystone being that “There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet.” See if the mountain will not come to muhammad.
