词汇 | mujahedeen |
词源 | mujahedeen. So often has this word been heard in the war against terrorism (2001) that it will almost certainly be used figuratively before long. Mujahedeen is Arabic for “warriors of the Holy War” and refers to the fundamentalist Muslims throughout the world fighting such a war, or jihad. These holy warriors are usually guerrillas or terrorists today. According to William Safire’s On Language column in the New York Times (11/9/01), mujahedeen isn’t recorded in English until 1922. The word isn’t listed in any major English dictionary. Its singular form is mujahid, and among several alternative spellings of mujahedeen, all correct, is mujahidin. |
