Marse Robert. Master Robert. A nickname of Confederate general Robert E. Lee (1807–70) during the Civil War. He was also called Robert Edward Lee, Uncle Robert, The King of Spades (for always urging his men to dig in deeper, deeper) and even Bobby Lee (though not to his face). His father was the legendary cavalryman Light-Horse Harry Lee, George Washington’s fa- vorite during the Revolutionary War. See also ulysses s. grant. |
