marone! A very old, common expression among Italians meaning wow, that’s great, fantastic, etc. A good example of it is found in the beginning of the film The Godfather. Several writers claim the word comes, indirectly, from Maronite, a member of the religious sect founded by fourth century monk St. Maron, but I wouldn’t bet on it. The word maronite, however, is from the name of John Maro, a seventh-century Syrian religious leader. |
