词汇 marigold
词源
marigold. There are several genera whose flowers are called marigold; the chief ones are Tagetes, which includes among its 30 species the French and African marigolds, and Calendula, a genus that counts the popular pot marigold among its 20 spe- cies. The pot marigold was found in the Holy Land by the early Crusaders and brought back to Europe, where it was probably named after the Virgin Mary and the color gold, being called “Mary’s gold” or “Marygold” before it became marigold. Lin- naeus gave the pot marigold its scientific designation, Calendu- la officinalis, but he merely used a name that had been given to the plant centuries before. The herbalist Gerard remarks that the name Calendula was bestowed upon the plant because it supposedly bloomed regularly “in the calends” or first days of almost every month (calends mean the first of the Roman month). Calendula officianalis differs from the so-called French and African species (Tagetes) mainly because its leaves are not strong-smelling. But the flowers of the Tagetes genus, also herbs, do resemble the pot marigold, so early American settlers gave them the same name. Tagetes possibly honors the Etrus- can god Tages, though this is not certain. All flowers of the ge- nus are native from North Mexico to the Argentine.
