James Polk won election to the American presidency in 1844 with this slogan, which referred to the oust- ing of the British from the whole of the Columbia River coun- try up to latitude 54 degrees 40 minutes N. After his election Polk discarded the slogan and settled the Oregon question without going to war. The sarcastic Whig slogan “Who is James K. Polk?” inspired the myth that Polk was a political nonentity and weak president. In truth, he was one of the hardest-working of all presidents, attained almost all his stated aims, and added more territory to the U.S. than any president except Jefferson.
