corn pone. Corn pone is a famous southern American corn- meal cake or bread, defined by Bartlett in 1859 as “a superior type of corn bread, made with milk and eggs and cooked in a pan.” It is often called “corn bread.” Cornpone has also come to be a derogatory term for someone or something rural and unsophisticated: “That’s a cornpone story.” The word pone comes from the Powhatan Indian word apan, something baked. |
