Lincoln shingles. Hardbread, also dubbed sheet-iron crack- ers, was called Lincoln shingles by U.S. troops on the frontier. The term is first recorded in Captain Eugene F. Ware’s The Indi- an War of 1874, but must date back to Civil War times, given the use of Abraham Lincoln’s name. A synonym was teeth dullers. |
