词汇 | martyr |
词源 | martyr. Martyr ultimately derives from the Greek word for “witness” and was applied as a designation of honor by early Christians to those who accepted the penalty of death rather than renounce their faith. But by the 14th century the word was being generally and even sarcastically used. The expression a martyr to science, one who loses his life through his devotion to science, seems to have been first applied to Claude-Louis, Comte Berthollet (1748–1822), who died trying to determine the effects of carbolic acid on the human body. |
