nom de guerre. “A name of war,” just another term for a pseudonym, usually for outlaws, pirates, war lords, and the like. Blackbird, Diabolito, Long Knife, Captain Buzzard, Gen- tleman Harry, Big John, Black Bart, and Calico Jack—these are only a few of the many pirates who chose to live under colorful pseudonyms or names of war that they invented or had be- stowed upon them. Nom de guerre is also a term (mostly French) for a pen name. In English nom de plume is preferred, as is pseudonym (the Greek for “false name”). |
