atropidae. Atropidae are book lice that feed on the bind- ings and paper of books, eventually destroying them. They are named for Atropos, one of the three Fates in Greek my- thology, the Fate that finally cut the thread of life. Why were the Atropidae or book lice named for someone who de- stroyed life? In ancient times the ticking sound they made was said to forebode a death. Atropos, the unturning (un- bending) fate, takes his name from the Greek a (without) and tropos (turning). |
