living fossil of the sea. A name often given to the common horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus), which is really no crab but a distant relative of the spider. Horseshoe crabs, or king crabs, are called living fossils because they have barely al- tered their appearance in 200 million years—these anthropods looked the same millions of years before the first of the giant dinosaurs lumbered over the land. They probably haven’t changed much because their large shell, which resembles a horseshoe, protects them so well, making it unnecessary for them to develop any further.
