词汇 | anonymous |
词源 | anonymous. Dating back to the late 16th century in English, anonymous derives from the Greek anonymos, meaning the same. An anonym is an anonymous person or a false name. “Anonymous” is surely the world’s most prolific author; tens of thousands of books and pamphlets have been published anony- mously since the invention of the printing press. Famous anon- ymous works include Poe’s first poems; Richardson’s Pamela, the first genuine novel in English; Fielding’s Joseph Andrews; al- most all of Jonathan Swift’s work; Smollett’s Roderick Random; all Jane Austen’s early works; Gray’s “Elegy”; Byron’s “Don Juan”; Dryden’s “Absalom and Achitophel”; Pope’s “Essay on Criticism”; and Tennyson’s “In Memoriam.” See by a lady. |
