Flemish. When rope is flemished it is coiled down concentri- cally in the direction of the sun, or like the coil of a watch spring, beginning in the center. Flemish also once meant “to force or score the planks.” The terms seem to have arisen in the early 19th century and take their name from Flemish sailors, considered to be neat seamen and who may have coiled their rope like this. |
