词汇 | adirondacks |
词源 | Adirondacks. The Mohawk Indians contemptuously dubbed a tribe of Algonquin Indians Adirondack, meaning “they eat bark,” and the tribe’s nickname came to be applied to the moun- tain region in northeastern New York that these Indians inhab- ited. The insulting name gives us, literally, “they eat bark” chairs, pack baskets, and even grapes, among many other items characteristic of the Adirondacks. |
