cantaloupe. The melon called a cantaloupe in the United States is not a cantaloupe. The cantaloupe, a variety of musk- melon, is named for Cantalupo, the Pope’s country seat near Rome, where the melon was first bred in Italy from an Arme- nian variety. True cantaloupes are only grown in Europe. The “cantaloupe” grown in the United States is really the netted or nutmeg muskmelon, which originated in Persia (Iran). Musk- melons were introduced to America by Columbus, who brought seeds to Hispaniola on his second voyage; the many delicious varieties of muskmelon include the honeydew, Persian, casaba, and banana melons. |
