yips. Also called golfer’s dystonia this ailment is described in The Merck Manuel (1997): “In the golf world, a bad case of dystonia is known as the yips. The muscles of the hands and wrists spontaneously contract, making it nearly impossible to putt. What was supposed to be a 3-foot putt can end up as a 15-foot putt when a golfer loses control because of the yips. The famous golfer Ben Hogan was afflicted with the yips; these muscle spasms are partly to blame for ending his career.” |
