crayfish. The crayfish, not a fish but a crustacean, takes its name from an error of pronunciation. Crayfish’s source was the Old High German kreliz, “edible crustacean,” which became crevice in Middle English. But the last part of crevice began to be pronounced “fish” and by the late 16th century the word was being pronounced and spelled crayfish. Crawfish is a synonym, as is crawdad in the American South. |
