词汇 | waffle |
词源 | waffle. The waffle takes its name from the Dutch wafel for the crisp batter cake baked in a waffle iron. But folklore holds that it was created by a knight who had returned to England from the Crusades in 1204. Sir Giles, it is said, came into the kitchen where his wife was baking cakes and accidentally sat on one while wearing his full suit of chain armor. He smashed the cake flat as a pancake but with rows of little indentations—the im- print of his armor. These proved excellent for holding butter and syrup and the waffle was born. According to this tongue- in-cheek story, the delectable dish was called the waffle “be- cause waffle is a word that is easy to pronounce when one’s mouth is full!” |
