词源 | wide-awakes. Wide-awakes were young Republicans, some 400,000 in number throughout the country, who avidly sup- ported Abraham Lincoln for president in 1860. The group orig- inated in Hartford, Connecticut, and was named for the hat members wore. The hat was made of a fabric that contained no “nap”—hence the pun wide-awake. |
