Why did the chicken cross the road? Among the oldest of jokes still told (by children), the answer being “to get to the other side.” The words date back at least to mid-19th-century England. They are also used by adults as a reply to what seems to be an unanswerable question. A recent gangster film, Heist (2001), has the lines: “Why did the chicken cross the road?” “Because the road crossed the chicken.” |
