Sargasso Sea. The relatively calm sea in the North Atlantic is named for the seaweed in it, not the other way around. Sargasso is the Portuguese name for the weed and the incredible tales of Sargasso weed choking the sea and holding ships captive forev- er were probably invented by the ancient Phoenecians to keep Greek ships away. The seaweed is also called gulfweed. See seaweed. |
