词汇 highfalutin
词源
highfalutin. Pretentious, pompous. The Americanism, dat- ing back at least to 1839, may be a variation on high-flown. Er- nest Weekley, in An Etymological Dictionary of Modern English (1921), wants to know if “this type of oratory is due to Red Indian influence” on Americans, though he does admit “we [British] can do a little in the same line. . . .” As an example of highfalutin American language he cites one of Dickens’s por- trayals of American stereotypes in Martin Chuzzlewit (1843– 44): “He is a true born child of this free hemisphere! Verdant as the mountains of our country; bright and flowing as our min- eral licks; unspoiled by withering conventionalities as air our broad and boundless perearers! Rough he may be. So air our buffalers. But he is a child of natur’ and child of freedom; and his boastful answer to the despot and the tyrant is that his bright home is in the settin’ sun.”
