doublethink. A coinage of British author George Orwell in Nineteen-Eighty-four (1949), doublethink, as the author ex- plained in his novel, meant “the power of holding two contra- dictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.” Orwell’s book, a warning about the possible coming of the ultimate police state, contributed many words and phrases, including its title, to the language. newspeak (a language of the dictatorship that narrows the range of free thought), Thought Police and big brother is watching you are among them. |
