sarcophagus. A coffin made of stone that rests above ground and is often decorated with sculpture. The word de- rives from the Greek sarkophagos, “eating flesh,” especially in the term lithos sarkophagos, which described a limestone the Greeks believed decomposed the corpses laid in it. The Greek word later was used for any stone coffin and took this mean- ing after it passed into English via Latin in the 17th century. See tattoo. |
