词汇 | rub the wrong way |
词源 | rub the wrong way. An ingenious theory links this expres- sion with the wet-rubbing of unfinished floors in Elizabethan homes. Oak floors that servants mopped against the grain be- came streaked, such carelessness giving rise to these words for the inept handling of people as well as floors. However, evi- dence is lacking; the phrase is first recorded in 1862 and must be marked “origin unknown.” |
