| 词源 | yarrow. A plant with whitish flowers, yarrow has often been used as a medicine and love tonic. According to one old super- stition, the drinking of such potions insured “seven years love for wedded couples.” Strictly speaking, Achillea millefolium is an herb, named for the legendary Achilles, who is supposed to have used one species to heal his wounds. It is sometimes called “Old Man’s Pepper,” to which family it does not belong, al- though it may make old men peppery. American folklore gives us the following advice concerning the plant: “Pick a sprig of yarrow, put the stem up your nose and say: Yarrow, yarrow, if he loves me and I love he, / A drop of blood I’d wish to see. If blood appears, it shows that you are loved.” Yarrow is called the car- penter’s herb in France, because it was once widely used there to heal cuts made by carpenters’ tools. |
