happening. Artist Allan Kaprow, who called himself an “un- artist,” coined the term happening in the late 1950s, its first printed appearance in The Nation of November 1959. A hap- pening is an improvised performance or spectacle, often involv- ing group or audience participation. Kaprow (1927–2006) was strongly influenced by Jackson Pollack and John Cage, among others. |
