词源	les sommobiches. A name the French gave all American sol- diers during World War I, because so many of them constantly used the expression son of a bitch. The latter term is hardly an Americanism, however: The four-word epithet, as it has been called, was first recorded in 1688 and is probably centuries old- er in forms like bitch-sone. Son of a bitch, or S.O.B., is so com- mon for a despicable person that it is sometimes even applied to a woman. See also goddam.
