词汇 laurels
词源
laurels. Laurels or bay leaves have symbolized victory since the winners at the Pythian games in ancient Greece were crowned with wreaths of laurel. The usage is still common in such expressions as “win the laurels,” “to rest on one’s laurels,” and “to look to one’s laurels.” Contrary to popular belief, the Greeks did not give wreaths of leaves from the bay laurel tree to Olympic game victors; they were awarded wreaths made of wild olives. (Winners of the Nemean games were given wreaths of green parsley, and Isthmian game victors received wreaths of dry parsley or green pine needles.) In any case, “winning the laurels” or “crowned with bays” has come to mean a reward of victory. Laurel is a symbol of peace, too, and of excellence in all the arts. The bay laurel tree (Laurus nobilis) grows up to 60 feet in Greece but is most popular in the United States grown in tubs and kept pruned to a desired shape. See also poet laureate.
