词汇 | massholes |
词源 | Massholes; foreigner. A century ago many more rivalries and much more name-calling existed between states. The name-calling, at least, hasn’t ended. Novelist Richard Russo, for example, notes in his fine Empire Falls (2001) that sum- mer visitors to Maine from Massachusetts are locally called “Massholes,” a memorable derogatory regionalism I can find in no other source. It sounds like a coinage typical of Main- ers, who also call people from out of state “foreigners” and might call someone a “grasshole” for working too hard on his lawn. |
