词汇 | mate |
词源 | mate. This word for buddy, chum, comrade, pal, or partner dates back to the late 14th century in England and is still com- mon there. It has, however, become a hallmark of Australian speech. The Aussies even apply mate to people thay barely know, while Americans rarely use the word except as a synonym for a spouse. Matey in both Australian and British English means very friendly: “They’ve been matey now for a year or so.” |
