Lamarckism. The chevalier de Lamarck, Jean-Baptiste- Pierre-Antoine de Monet (1744–1829) proposed a theory of evolution holding that species evolve by inheriting traits ac- quired through the use or disuse of body parts, this concept known as the inheritance of acquired characteristics. His theo- ry in some ways anticipated Darwin’s in 1859. Lamarck, who was France’s royal botanist and custodian of the Jardin des Plantes, wrote many natural history books. He died in poverty, his eyesight gone and his work discredited. See darwinian.
