Wild Bill Hickok. Any fabled gunfighter; after James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok (1837–76), army scout, gambler, and town marshall of Abilene, Kansas. Though a handsome dandy, with long blond hair hanging over his shoulders, Hickok was first called “Duck Bill” after his long nose and protruding lip. He met his violent end at the hands of a paranoid rival who shot him in the back of the head while he was playing poker. See deadman’s hand. |
