Actually it was about a third of that, and the novel still had to be cut extensively. Often Wolfe would agree to cut only if he were allowed to write what he called a “transitional sentence.” The transitional sentences would turn into transitional paragraphs, pages, and chapters, but his work was usually pruned into shape by his editors.
