词汇 | dioscorea |
词源 | Dioscorea. While many genera and species of flowers and fruits are named for people, the yam is the only major vegeta- ble, excluding vegetable varieties, to take even its scientific name from a real person. The yam’s botanical name is Di- oscorea batatas; the genus, containing many species, was named by Linnaeus for Pedanius Dioscorides, or, more cor- rectly, Dioscurides, a first-century physician and an early fa- ther of botany. A surgeon in Nero’s Roman army, Dioscorides gathered information about 600 medicinal plants and other remedies of the period, which he recorded in his De Materia Medica, translated in 1934 as the Greek Herbal of Dioscorides. Dioscorides’ work remained standard for centuries and he is considered to be the first man to establish medical botany as an applied science. Dioscorea batatas, the yam, is often incor- rectly called a sweet potato, to which it is no relation, despite the similarity in appearance and taste. |
