watermelon. Originating in Africa, watermelon has been cultivated for thousands of years, but seems to have been so named only since 1605. There were many old names for the melon, including names in Arabic and Sanskrit. The watermel- on is an important water source in many arid regions but con- sidered a fruit dessert in most places. Mark Twain considered it “chief of the world’s luxuries . . . When one has tasted it, he knows what angels eat.” The Chinese call the watermelon the west-melon (shih-quah).
