词源 | War of the Roses. In 1551 the red and white variety of the damask rose (Rosa damascena versicolor) was popularly named “York and Lancaster” to memorialize the English Wars of the Roses between the houses of York and Lancaster. This 30-year struggle for the throne of England began in 1455; the house of York adopted a white rose for its emblem and the house of Lan- caster chose a red rose. The war ended only when the two houses were united through marriage. |
