putative. The fictional author of a work, a character to which the author assigns its authorship, a putative author almost al- ways narrates the story and pretends to have written it. Putative comes from the Latin for “to think,” because the narrator char- acter and his readers really think he wrote the book. Putative marriage, for an illegal marriage but one made in good faith, is first recorded early in the 19th century. |
