Purple Heart. George Washington originated the medal called the Purple Heart during the Revolutionary War. His or- der in 1782 explained that “the General, ever desirous to cher- ish virtuous ambition in his soldiers, as well as to foster and en- courage every species of military merit, directs that whenever any singularly meritorious action is performed, the author of it shall be permitted to wear over the left breast, the figure of a heart in purple cloth, or silk, edged with narrow lace or bind- ing.” Originally given for “meritorious action,” and awarded to three or four Revolutionary War soldiers, it is now granted for battle wounds.
