词汇 | rock ’n’ roll |
词源 | rock ’n’ roll. The best guess is that rock ’n’ roll “reflects a sexual metaphor,” as one writer puts it, quoting the lyrics “My baby rocks me with one steady roll.” Rock and roll music, an outgrowth of black culture in America, of course dates back much earlier than the first recorded use of the term in the ear- ly 1950s, deriving from black “rhythm and blues.” The first major film to use rock and roll music was Blackboard Jungle (1955). Director Richard Brooks bought the rights to use the song “Rock Around the Clock” in the film for $4,000. He could have bought the song outright for another $1,000, but the studio refused to pay. “Rock Around the Clock” went on to sell 1.5 million records that year, becoming one of the big- gest hits of all time. |
