词汇 | and thereby hangs a tale |
词源 | and thereby hangs a tale. This has been the title of more than one book in modern times, though it is rarely used seri- ously anymore as a storytelling device. The expression goes back at least to the time of Shakespeare, who used it a number of times, notably in As You Like It. Here are Shakespeare’s words: And so from hour to hour we ripe and ripe And then from hour to hour we rot and rot, And thereby hangs a tale. |
