词汇 | anchor man |
词源 | anchor man. The strongest member of a track team, the run- ner who runs the last leg in a relay race, has been called the an- chor man since the late 19th century. Possibly the term has its roots in the “anchor man” at the end of a tug of war, but there is no proof that this usage came first. In any case, anchor man came to be applied to the last swimmer in a relay race, too, and by the 1930s was being used for the strongest member of a radio broad- casting team. With the rise of women in sports and television news broadcasting, the term is increasingly heard as anchor. |
