Linnaeus named this early-blooming shrub with white blossoms for the mythological maiden Andromeda, daughter of the king of Ethiopia, who was chained to a rock as an offering to a sea monster, but was rescued by Perseus, the son of Zeus. In order to marry the beautiful Andromeda, Per- seus had to defeat another suitor who tried to carry her off. He did so by showing his rival the head of the Medusa, which changed him to stone. |
