In 1934 Thomas Andreas Carvelas, a Yonkers, New York, resident, invented a machine for making soft, frozen cus- tard ice cream, which he sold from a truck, competing with such rivals as the Good Humor man. Carvelas later legally changed his name to Tom Carvel and sold franchises that made the Carvel name a household word for soft ice cream by the 1960s.
