词汇 | date |
词源 | date. Date palms from the Mediterranean area were intro- duced to America by Spanish missionaries in the early 1700s. The fruit of this palm takes its name from the Latin dactylus, “finger,” as people in ancient times believed it resembled the human finger. The date has been called “the candy that grows on trees” because about half its weight is sugar. Thousands of acres of date trees grow in California’s Coachella Valley. Their large bunches of fruit are wrapped in heavy paper to protect them from insects and moisture, and helicopters periodically hover over the groves to fan away dampness. A merely “aver- age” date palm produces about 100 pounds of fruit a year. In times past, dates were cheaper than grain in some regions, and the tree was said to have 360 uses, ranging from fermented drinks made from its sap to the “cabbage” consisting of the new foliage sprouting from its crown. See phoenix tree. |
