词汇 durian
词源
durian.  The durian fruit takes its name from the Malasian duri, thorn. This lopsided, hard-shelled green fruit of the Durio zibethinus tree, volleyball-sized and covered with spines on its outer pod, is widely believed to be an aphrodisiac in Malaya, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. An old Malay saying has it that “When the durians fall, the sarongs rise.” The emperor fruit or king fruit or queen fruit is thought to be so rich in pro- tein that pregnant women are advised to eat it only in moderate amounts for fear that they might produce a child “too large to come out.” The durian, which comes in over 100 varieties, is so well regarded in Asia that the ownership of just one tree (they often reach 80 feet high) can make a person prosperous. One 16th-century traveler claimed that the durian “surpasses in fla- vor all the fruits of the world.” The only trouble with the durian is that it literally stinks. Addicts say that it is no more objec- tionable than Gorgonzola or Camembert cheese, but most non-Asians consider it among the foulest-smelling foods in the world; one gourmet wrote, “to say it smells like rotten garlicky cheese is generous.” British author Anthony Burgess has com- pared eating durian to eating vanilla custard in a latrine. Air- lines refuse to carry durians even in sealed containers, and Asian hotel rooms literally have to be fumigated after durian feasts. One husband is reported to have chased his wife out of bed, making her eat her prize specimen on their hotel fire escape.
